WE ARE NOW ON FACEBOOK The Greater Miami USBC has joined the 21st century; we are now on Facebook. The future of our social networking on the Internet has begun. We will actively post our annual meeting, accomplishments, tournaments, events, pictures and youth activities. We are all very excited to have launched this new adventure. Please join us on Facebook. Enter Greater Miami USBC Association, Inc. into the Search area to get started.ADULT CITY TOURNAMENT The tournament is scheduled for March 12-13, 2011. The regular closing date is March 8 and the final closing date is the last squad on March 13. Even though we allow walk-in entries, don’t get shut out.........get your entry forms in as soon as you can. There will be separate classifications for women and open (men or women) entries. Start now by forming teams from members of your leagues or with friends. Look for the entry forms at the bowling center. An entry form is also available on the association web site at www.miamibowling.org/tournaments. As with last year’s tournament, there will be a guaranteed minimum first prize for each classification for singles and all events. For the women, the guaranteed minimum first prize is $200.00 for singles and $150.00 for all events. For the open, the guaranteed minimum first prize is $400.00 for singles and $300.00 for all events.SENIOR TOURNAMENT Due to popular request, there will be another Senior Tournament that will occur on April 10. Bowlers will be notified via their leagues and entry forms should be available at our City Tournament. Remember, you need to be at least 50 years old to consider bowling in this tournament. It has a small entry fee and is lots of fun for all of the participants.TOP 8 TOURNAMENT The annual Top 8 Invitational Tournament is scheduled to be held on July 17, 2011 at Bird Bowl. The tournament has separate divisions for men, women, boys and girls. If you believe you might be one of the bowlers who will quality for this tournament, you should plan now so you can keep this date open. Be watchful of this date if you plan to enter the state tournament. To quality for Top 8, you must bowl in two leagues (one for youth) with at least 60 games in each, and be in the top composite averages in the city. Bowlers who qualify, plus a few alternates, will be notified by mail sometime in early June. |
HALFWAY THERE Most leagues are right about halfway through their season. This is just a reminder that as bowlers you have to make sure that your officers are doing what they need to do for your league, and in the case of secretary and treasurer, are paid to do. Is your secretary sending off for any awards you might have qualified for? Does your president (along with a committee) audit the books of your treasurer? If not, demand that they do this as it is part of their job, and a requirement from the national USBC. Make sure that your treasurer has a financial statement printed up at the conclusion of the season so that you can see where all the money you have put into the league is going. They should also have a final league sheet for each of you. Please be reminded that your yearbook average is the one that you have as of May 1st, not the end of the season. You can always check what your average is by going to www.bowl.com and looking up all of the information they have about you and your bowling. Have fun and stay competitive. HOMESTEAD TO REOPEN? Information has been received that just may indicate something may very much be in the works for the reopening of Homestead Bowling Center. The center closed operations in December, 2007. Some things are in process at the present time, and quite a few things need yet to happen. A business group has submitted intent to purchase the property from the City of Homestead. On February 8, the Homestead City Council voted in favor to allow the purchase for a bowling center. When the purchase is finalized, there is quite a bit of work to be completed on the inside of the building on the lanes and pinsetters to get the center ready for business. There may also be some other refurbishing done. As we receive updated information, we will keep everyone informed on Facebook and our association web site at www.miamibowling.org .BIRD BOWL Bird Bowl has persevered over the years and is the only regulation set of lanes to operate full time in Miami Dade County. The management has worked hard to decorate and maintain the facility so that we can enjoy our bowling experience. Please do what you can to help them continue to prosper. There are birthday parties for kids of all ages, open bowling, tournaments, discount food and beverage nights, and league bowling. The front counter staff and the concourse workers have been very efficient this year and the management is always trying to make things better for the bowlers. |
PROPER BOWLING ETTIQUITE On those nights that the lanes are not the way you would like to see them, please don’t complain to the employees, beat on the equipment, or kick the ball return. Remember, house management and your league has the right to remove you from the premises and/or suspend you from further league play for abusing the equipment. Be considerate to your fellow league bowlers. Make your bowling center a place that everyone can be proud of so that it will continue to be here for all of us in the future.
LEIA SCHWARTZ We have a celebrity among us. Leia is 14, and a ninth grader in the Visual and Performing Arts Magnet at Coral Reef Senior High. She was chosen as the 2010-2011 Junior Orange Bowl Queen. She will serve as a Goodwill Ambassador and resign over the 2010-2011 Junior Orange Bowl Festival. She is part of the largest International Youth Sports and Arts Festival in the world. The tri-county search looks for young ladies who will be future leaders and role models and her selection as Queen was based on several factors including personality, poise, academics and commitment to our community. Leia is on the Coral Reef bowling team, bowls in the junior program at Bird Bowl and competes in the junior scholarship tournaments. Her mom, Laura Leavy Schwartz, competed both locally and internationally. Her godparents are Sue and Dave Covington, who have both bowled on the professional tour. Congratulations to Leia and her parents, David & Laura. BOWLERETTES Bowlerettes is the oldest women’s traveling tournament in the South Florida area. Scratch and handicap tournaments (6 mixed) are held on the first Sunday of each month (unless it occurs on a holiday weekend). CONGRATULATIONS TO Yes, congratulations are due to Michelle as she rolled her first 300 game on her first night of bowling after the Christmas break. All 12 strikes were in the pocket so this score was well deserved. Her team began cheering her on as early as the 4th strike and got louder until the final ball was thrown. 300 games by ladies are not as frequent as those achieved by the men. In fact, only Melissa Coile shot a 300 last year and there is only one lady, Stacey Harper, who can boast about bowling more than a couple of them. Keep up the good bowling!
THE MIAMI
HERALD Congratulations to the following local youth high school bowlers who received All Dade honors from the Miami Herald:

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS Scholarship applications for the Greater Miami USBC and Florida State USBCY are now available. It is very important that you ask your coaches or Youth Director for these applications. Any graduating high school senior or college student, providing his or her amateur standing is maintained, is eligible to submit an application for this scholarship. The Florida State USBCY typically gives out eight to fifteen $1,000.00 scholarships each year. How great would it be if one of our youth bowlers were to receive one of these scholarships? It has happened in the past. All forms must be mailed to the Florida State Secretary Board of Trustees no later than May 2, 2011. Our local Greater Miami USBC scholarships are $500.00 and must be mailed to our Association Manager no later than June 1, 2011. This can happen with your help. Rachel Benton, Susie Coile and Kathy Meyers have distributed some of these applications. Please ask one of them if you didn’t receive one. Complete it and mail it on time and just maybe you will be a winner. If you have any questions please feel free to contact:

BOWLING TIPS Here are two tips that may help with your scoring and help win your games. Tip #1 – Bowling Ball Maintenance: When a bowling ball is new, its surface is very clean, unmarked, and will roll very true with a good amount of hitting power. As more bowling is done with it, two things start to slowly happen over time. The first thing is the lane oil starts to get absorbed into the surface. The second thing is the surface starts to wear with scratching in the area known as the “track”. Each of these will cause the ball to roll more inconsistently and lose hitting power. To get the optimum amount of life from your bowling ball, it needs to be periodically maintained. The simplest maintenance is to keep the surface clean by wiping it down with a USBC approved ball cleaner after play is finished. This can be water, isopropyl alcohol, or a cleaner that can be purchased at your pro shop. To see a list of all of the USBC approved cleaners, visit www.bowl.com, go to the bottom of the page and click on “Equipment Specifications”, and on the page that returns, there is a shortcut on the right to get to the cleaner list. You can also bring the ball to your pro shop operator, who will place it into a machine that will provide a very efficient cleaning. Now, regarding the wear in the ball track area, the type of maintenance on this is something that should be done by your pro shop operator. When you start to notice a lot of scratches in this area, take it to the pro shop for a resurfacing process that will help make the ball roll as if it was new again. Tip #2 – Plastic Spare Ball: Most of the better bowlers will use a plastic ball to shoot at certain spares. The reason for using plastic is simple. It goes very straight, and reduces the chance of the ball hooking away from a spare. The technique is to throw the ball directly at the spare, and not depend on any hooking action. Using plastic provides a better percentage of converting the spare, particularly the corner spares. One word of advice: plastic should not be used to shoot at spares that have “double wood”, which is where a pin stands behind another pin, such as the 2-8. The reason is because a plastic ball tends to not drive through to hit the back pin on less than a direct center hit on the front pin. |
