Welcome back for the 2009-2010 bowling season. As in previous years, Bird Bowl offers leagues for juniors, seniors, men, women, and mixed teams. In the Keys, the Fish Bowl offers mixed leagues. Both houses have a host of special offers for open bowling and birthday party celebrations. Please support your bowling centers this year.

USBC CHANGES FOR 2009-2010

The national USBC has enacted the following changes for the 2009-2010 season.

Youth:
Youth membership is now available only to those who have not reached their 20th birthday, as of August 1.

Youth membership dues have changed to $17 per year.

Awards:
The changes to the awards program are extensive. USBC has eliminated some of the long-standing awards, and has established more restrictions on others. There are also some new awards. Refer to Chapter 3 in the USBC rule book for details on the USBC awards.

  • The 7-10 split award has been eliminated.
  • The Big 4 split award has been eliminated.
  • The Dutch 200 game award has been eliminated.
  • The Triplicate series award has been eliminated.
  • The All Spare game award has been eliminated.
  • The 75 Pins Over Average game award has been eliminated.
  • The 140 Pins Over Average series award has been eliminated.
  • Youth Awards (the average must be lower than the award to qualify)

  • Game awards are now for 100 game to 275 games in 25 pin increments.
  • Series awards are now for 300 series to 750 series in 50 pin increments.
  • There are new game awards for those 12 and under for 50 game to 100 game in 25 pin increments.
  • There are new series awards for those 12 and under for 100 series to 300 series in 50 pin increments.
  • Adult Awards:

  • A 275-299 game with a 200 average or less
  • A 250-274 game with a 180 average or less
  • A 225-249 game with a 160 average or less
  • A 200-224 game with a 145 average or less
  • A 175-199 game with a 130 average or less
  • A 150-174 game with a 110 average or less
  • A 125-149 game with a 90 average or less
  • A 700-799 series with a 190 average or less
  • A 600-699 series with a 160 average or less
  • A 500-599 series with a 130 average or less
  • A 400-499 series with a 105 average or less
  • A 300-399 series with a 80 average or less
  • League Rules:
    Rule 105: The change now gives leagues the flexibility to establish vacancy scores.

    Rule 107c: The change now gives leagues more flexibility to determine eligibility for league awards.

    Rule 109a: The change allows leagues the flexibility to determine the minimum legal lineup.

    Rule 113a: The change allows leagues to declare co-champions in the event of a first place tie, if the league adopts this in their rules.

    Rule 113b: The change allows leagues the opportunity to decide what type of first place tie-breaker to use if the co-champion rule is not adopted.

    TOP 8 TOURNAMENT

    The 2009 Top 8 Tournament was held at Bird Bowl on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

    To qualify for the Top 8 Tournament, bowlers must compete in at least two leagues, have at least 60 games in each, and finish with a composite average of the two leagues high enough to be in the top 8 in the city. In the youth area, when there are not enough bowlers with two leagues to fill the field in a division, then those with one league will be selected afterward. (This occurred in both the boys and girls’ divisions).

    ASSOCIATION INFORMATION

    Local Association
    The Greater Miami USBC Association president, Patty Nevers, along with the entire board, all wish you a wonderful year of bowling. Many of you may wonder what the board, consisting of hard-working volunteers, does for you, the bowler. Listed below are the main services that the association provides for you:

  • Certify that the bowling lanes meet required USBC specifications
  • Process league sanction applications and your USBC memberships
  • Run the annual association tournaments as well as other special tournaments
  • Provide league supplies and hold a workshop for all league secretaries and officers
  • Maintain records of all of the bowlers and assemble a yearbook with all of the bowlers’ averages
  • Interpret rules and provide guidance to league members
  • Process awards and deliver them to the bowling establishments
  • Maintain a website to keep you informed:

      State Association
    You, the bowler, have representation at the state USBC association level as well. Three delegates from our local association (Patty Nevers, Glenda Beckett, and Sharon Colon) attended the Women’s State Convention on your behalf. They are pleased to report that even though we are now a small association, we now have three Miami bowlers representing us on the state level. Sue Jacobs holds the office of Vice President, Mell Brooks is the Sergeant-At-Arms, and Margo Buzzard was voted in as a director. Additionally, Sharon Colon was named to the nominating committee and was also awarded two second place certificates for articles included in the State Newsletter. Representing the men in their state association is Rudy Levarity who has moved up to 2nd Vice President. He will be named state President in the year 2012.

    HALL OF FAME

    This year we will be inducting Mike Greene into the Greater Miami USBC Bowling Hall of Fame. He is being inducted into the Hall in the category of bowling ability. He has had twenty 300 games and seven 800 series. He has many tournament wins. His high average has been a 231. He was Bowler of the Year for the 2000-2001 season.

    A dinner is planned for his induction on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Miami Elks Lodge 948 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be available for $32.00. Please contact Danielle Graham at 786-351-5624 for more information.

    In addition to the dinner, "The Usual Suspects" will be playing Classic Southern Rock and Roll and original music during the evening. We will have our annual "Egg Event". All the proceeds from this event will go directly into our Junior Scholarship Fund. It is a fun night that you won’t want to miss. We look forward to seeing everyone at this great event.

    If you would like to nominate someone for the Hall of Fame, you can do so by submitting their name, for consideration, to Danielle Graham by January 15th. There are categories for both ability and service

    FLORIDA STATE YOUTH USBC

    Alex Rodriguez, who is a new member of our local board’s Youth Committee, became the Association Manager for the FSUSBC Youth Association during the Annual Meeting on June 27, 2009 in Ocala. He joins Bruce Garey and Dianna Rose who are Zone Directors on the state youth board.

    GREATER MIAMI YOUTH LEADERS USBC MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT

    This tournament is dedicated in loving memory to all those that we have lost and have had the pleasure of knowing and bowling with. This tournament will be held at Bird Bowl on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Finals competition will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2009.

    The tournament will feature three divisions: Lower Handicap, Upper Handicap and Scratch. Handicap will be 90% of 200. The Scratch Division offers four Junior Gold spots for the 2010 Junior Gold Tournament. The lane conditioning for the tournament will be a sport shot.

    Bowlers will be competing for scholarship money. First place will be guaranteed $250 for each division. The entry fee is $25 for the Handicap Divisions and $35 for the Scratch Division. Optional Junior Gold entry fee will be an additional $20. There will be two squads for the Handicap Division, and one squad for the Scratch Division. Check-in time for the first Handicap Division squad and for the Scratch squad will start on Saturday at 12:00 noon. Check-in time for the second Handicap Division squad will start on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

    2009 FSUSBC PEPSI YOUTH BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS TOURNAMENT

    The annual Florida State USBC Youth Pepsi tournament was held this past spring at Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven. Congratulations to the following Miami bowlers who placed for scholarship money in the 12 & Over Handicap Boys Division:

    Felix Lopez 8th Place $520.00

    Daniel Hurst 11th Place $422.00

    Lance Elder 16th Place $352.00

    David Garcia 40th Place $227.00

    YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

    The Greater Miami USBC Association congratulates David Garcia, Andrew Meyers and Patrick O’Donnell for earning $500.00 in scholarships. Andrew was also awarded a $1000.00 scholarship at the Florida State Youth Association Delegates meeting in Ocala. With the help of our Youth Committee we were able to raise money through local tournaments. Donations were added to our scholarship fund. These three young men will continue their education at different colleges.

    • David Garcia graduated from St. Brendan’s and will be attending Barry University. He would like to become a Personal Fitness Trainer and will be studying Athletic Training and Exercise Science.
    • Andrew Meyers graduated from Miami Springs and will be headed to Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. He wants to study Computer Science and Programming and some day he would like to become a teacher.
    • Patrick O’Donnell graduated from Ferguson and is enrolled at Florida State University. He is studying Business and Engineering and would like to be involved in the Green Technology Field.

    With the help of your donations we will continue to add to our scholarship fund for all the youth bowlers in Dade County.

    Youth bowlers who are graduating seniors can apply for the Greater Miami USBC scholarships. See youth coaches or visit our web site at www.miamibowling.org for information about applying. The deadline is May 31.

    2009 USBC JUNIOR OLYMPIC GOLD

    This year’s Junior Gold Tournament was held in bowling centers in Indianapolis, Indiana.

    The championship featured 2,054 youth bowlers from across the country who competed for $145,000 in scholarships, individual titles and spots on Junior Team USA.

    Florida had many bowlers who bowled well this year, including 3 from Miami:

    Boys: Andrew Koff – 2nd Place

    Girls: Alyssa Harper – 55th Place

    Ana Koff – 116th Place

    Congratulations to Andrew Koff who made Junior Team USA for the second year in a row.

    Next year’s Junior Gold tournament is being held again in Indianapolis, Indiana.

    In order to bowl in the tournament, you must win a spot in a qualifying tournament. The Greater Miami Youth Leaders USBC Memorial Tournament will be a qualifying tournament for Junior Gold.

    IN MEMORY

    Paul D. Boller, January 1937 – July 2009

    Greater Miami USBC Hall of Fame member Paul Boller passed away July 29, 2009. Paul was born in Carroll County, Indiana and moved to Florida in 1947. He was appointed to the Greater Miami Bowling Association board of directors by association President Gene Chilson in 1979 and became Secretary/Treasurer in 1981. He remained in that position until 1988. In 1984, he was elected to the National ABC Board of Directors and retired from that position on May 1, 2004. He had served as President, Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer of the Greater Miami Bowling Council. He was a member of the Greater Miami Junior Bowling Association board of directors from 1996 to 2004. He was inducted into the Greater Miami USBC Hall of Fame in 1998 for his service. He had been involved with bowling in Miami since 1958.

    Paul had moved to Wesley Chapel, Florida (near Tampa) two years ago.

    Paul is survived by his life companion, Maria A. Smith, 1 son and 3 daughters, 2 stepchildren, 5 grandchildren and 7 step grandchildren.
